Yeah, you can read a little racism into his letter. I'd argue, though, that if it's anything, it's prejudiced against southern athletes (locationism? regionalism?). He's responding to a Chicago Sun-Times article (http://www.suntimes.com/sports/preps/249798,CST-SPT-cruit09.article ) wherein the author, one Taylor Bell, and Tom Lemming effectively say that southern athletes are too stupid to get into Big Ten schools. Rather than question that point, Delany implicitly agreed with it and argued that the Big Ten is doing fine as is. Not a smart move by him, and he deserves the heat he's taking, but to paraphrase Billy Joel, he didn't start this fire.

That's great news Patrick!

Thanks for the background. Brian Cook added a little at the FanHouse as well about the topic. I just loved the headline at the site I linked to. I respect Mr. Delany quite a bit.

Delany's a smart guy who just wrote a really dumb letter.

Yeah, I didn't think you were out to get him or anything, CFR, especially since you're both on the same side of the playoff debate, though for different reasons (ideological for you, financial for him). It is an entertaining headline, I must admit. Just saying that it's important to realize Delany's not the only idiot involved in this whole SEC vs. Big Ten vs. academics thing.
