Tony Barnhart: We've Already Got A Playoff
Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at 02:44PM Duh.
The fact that a game like USC-Oregon State game can impact so many other schools has pushed television ratings higher and is keeping stadiums full. And as long as the TV ratings are high and the stadiums are full, there is no motivation (other than fan unrest) to go to a playoff of any kind.
And:
But if we had an eight-team playoff in place, that Oregon State victory would have barely created a ripple outside of the Pac-10.
Claiming a playoff won't dilute the regular season is an idiotic lie, and Barnhart accurately realizes it.

No, claiming we already have a playoff when, in fact, we actually have regular season league play, is an idiotic lie.
The regular season is already diluted with all these cupcake out-of-conference schedules. I guess that escaped your attention. You cannot determine the best team in the country by having them play in isolated leagues all year and then voting for two teams to get into the "National Championship" game. It's a joke. And so is an inconsequential bowl game.
You can perform all the illogical mental gymnastics you want to try to demonize a playoff system, but the fact remains it is the only real way to determine a true National Champion. Every other real sport realizes this, and is much more entertaining for it.
So, having 25 or so patients in the asylum with you doesn't make you sane. Sorry.
